Why Purpose-Built Battery Technology Is the Key to Heavy-Duty Electrification

Good battery technology doesn't start with a spec sheet. It starts with a problem worth solving.

Every commercial vehicle segment comes with its own set of constraints from packaging, duty cycle, performance expectations, and zero tolerance for downtime. A solution that works well in one context may not be the best option for another.

That's why Proterra's development process starts with what customers actually need in their application. And it's why out modular battery architecture matters: rather than engineering a one-size-fits-all solution, Proterra can reconfigure and repackage proven components to meet the specific demands of each application, without starting from scratch every time. The result is purpose-built reliable performance.

Today, Proterra's battery solutions power a wide range of applications from port equipment, off-highway construction and mining machines, school bus, transit, trucking and specialty vehicles. That breadth reflects something important: heavy-duty electrification isn't solving one problem. It's solving dozens of different problems, each with its own duty cycle, packaging constraints, and performance demands.

CEO Chris Bailey describes Proterra’s development philosophy simply: "A solution looking for a problem is a problem." Before building anything, Proterra runs an exhaustive process of gathering customer input to understand integration requirements from electrical, mechanical, and software perspectives before a single design decision is made.

That process drove the development of our latest product variant in our Onyx Battery Platform, the H2-23 battery pack, purpose-built for the Class 8 trucking market. Class 8 is the largest commercial vehicle segment in the US by volume, and also one of the most technically demanding. Long range requirements, tight packaging, sustained high-draw performance and operators who can't afford downtime.

From school buses to Class 8 trucks to off-highway equipment, Proterra's Onyx Platform is adaptable to new solutions yet built on the same foundation: deep customer partnership, proven modular architecture, and an unwavering commitment to powering the shift to a more sustainable future.
